We know there’s nothing a college aged student loves to hear more than “check with your parents.” Yeah, right. Once you’re out of the home and off to college on your own, the last thing in the world you want to hear is that you should check with your parents about anything. But when the credit card companies come calling (and they will), take our free advice on this one: invite your parents to help you with the credit card comparison.

You see, there are a lot of different kinds of credit cards. They’re not all created equally. And while any of them can get you in trouble if you’re not careful with them, a little credit card comparison can go a long ways towards saving you money and hassle down the road.

Here are some things to talk about with your parents:

Should you get a rewards credit card, and if so, which kind? If you are going to school out of state and need to occasionally fly home, you may want to consider a credit card which offers frequent flier miles. Or, if you drive a lot, you may want a card which gives you reward points when you buy gas. Bet you didn’t even know those were options, did you? Your parents did.

How much of a limit can you afford to carry? It’s not always to your advantage to get a high credit limit. You can get yourself in a lot of trouble that way. Have your parents’ help you budget and figure out what kind of a balance you can afford to run on your credit card.

What kind of fees will you have to pay with this card? While all of the information is generally on the application for your credit card, a lot of it may be difficult to understand, especially if you’ve never dealt with credit cards before. Have your parents go over the fine print with you so that you really know what you’re getting into.

On top of talking with your parents about any credit card you are considering accepting, let us suggest that you keep the balance as close to zero as you can. If you’re like most students, you’re going to have enough to worry about paying off with your student loans. The last thing you need is a large credit card balance. We know, you’re going to get a job paying a bazillion dollars a year, but even still, you’ve got better uses for that money.

Vintage cars. A fine Bordeaux red. And, apparently, credit cards. If you’ve done any research into your credit score, you probably already know that older lines of credit are better than newer ones. So, anytime you’re doing credit card comparison, think twice about replacing that older card with a new one.

Don’t get us wrong, there are times when it makes sense to transfer your balance or to start using cards which offer you a better annual percentage rate. But when it comes to building your credit, there’s more that you have to consider for credit card comparison.

The elusive perfect score

Perfect credit scores are rare, with only about one million people having them in the entire country. We know, a million sounds like a lot, but when you compare it to the US population, it really isn’t many. What the vast majority of those with perfect (or even very high) credit scores have in common, though, is seasoned credit.

So, if you’re aiming for the moon with your credit score (and you should be), hold on to your old credit cards. As long as the accounts are in good standing, it can really pay off to occasionally dust off the cobwebs and pull out that store credit card you’ve had since you were 20 years old. The longer your oldest accounts have been open, the better it will reflect on your credit rating.

Other factors

Of course, the age of your lines of credit isn’t the only factor in determining your credit score. We all know that we need to pay our creditors off in a timely manner to keep our scores high. Most of us also know that it’s better to occasionally charge something and pay it off than it is to avoid credit altogether (at least when it comes to improving your credit score). It’s also important to keep your debt to income ratio manageable. The less debt you carry compared to the amount of income you make, the better.

Still, any trick that will raise your credit score a few points can save you a bundle of money, to say nothing of allowing you better access to credit sources. So, if you have an older credit card, or some other seasoned line of credit, use it occasionally. It’ll raise your score.

Heck, most of us can look in the mirror and find someone who has at least occasionally misused his plastic. Regardless of what people tell you, though, neither the credit card companies nor the little shiny plastic cards themselves are the problem. With a little common sense and some credit card comparison, you can keep your debt under control without rushing to the drawer for a pair of scissors.

Now, if you’re a compulsive person and your debt is out of control, don’t let us stop you. By all means, cut up your cards. If you don’t, someone else will soon enough. Fortunately, though we may occasionally get out of hand with credit cards, most of us aren’t that desperate.

If you find your credit card bills are starting to creep up a bit higher than your comfort zone, here are some things you can do to dial things back a bit:

Credit card comparison. When we think of credit cards, we think of shopping, not shopping around. But if you can find a better interest rate (or better yet, a zero transfer rate), you can save yourself a bundle on credit card payments.

Limit yourself to one or two cards. Let’s face it, having a dozen cards at your fingertips is way to much temptation for the average person to handle without going nuts and shopping ‘til they drop. Unless you have extraordinary self control, two credit cards is plenty for you.

Be accountable. One of the biggest things that get people into trouble financially is feeling like they don’t need to answer to anyone. If you’re married, make sure your spouse knows what you’re spending. Otherwise, bring in someone who is financially wise and can help you keep your spending in line and have them help hold you accountable.

Keep receipts. Often simply going over the receipts at the end of the day every day is enough to keep you cognizant of how much you are spending, which can help you from getting carried away with your credit cards.

If you find that you’ve done all these things and still have trouble managing your credit cards, consider seeing a credit counselor. Many credit counseling services are offered free, and even the ones which charge a fee are generally fairly reasonable.

Despite the bad rap they often receive from debt relief counselors, credit cards can actually help you build your credit rating faster than many other forms of credit, if you use them responsibly. After you have done some credit card comparison to make sure you get the best deal available before taking a credit card, you can start improving your credit rating right away.

Of course, any time you make a payment on any debt, it will show up on your credit report, and can affect your credit rating. When it comes to using credit cards, however, there are some specific things you can do to benefit your credit rating. These include:

Keep your credit cards open. Even though a little credit card comparison will likely help you find a better rate, closing your credit cards out can negatively affect your credit score.

Use your credit card. Having a credit card which you don’t use doesn’t really help your credit score. Go ahead and make a few reasonable charges.

Pay more than the minimum balance, but don’t pay off the entire balance every month. While you will save money paying off the entire balance every month, it won’t raise your credit score as much as if you made regular payments which are below the balance.

Make a large purchase and pay it off over several months. Treat it almost like you would a bank loan.

As your credit score rises, you will find that you are able to borrow more money at a lower rate of interest. Be careful that you don’t allow yourself to get out of hand, either with credit cards or any other form of credit. Used responsibly, credit cards can enhance your life. Used without some degree of restraint, they can take you to the poor house in a hurry.

Most people with high credit scores find that it’s much better to pay off their credit cards in full at the end of the month. In most cases, this saves you from paying any interest. It’s worth it, on some level, to pay a little interest while you are building credit, in the interest of raising your credit score. But once your score is high enough, there’s no need to throw your money away on credit card interest.

We’ve known several couples over the years who have been counseled, sometimes by secular financial advisers, and sometimes by pastors or other religious leaders, to take a pair of scissors to all of their credit cards and never look back. But, is this good advice? For most people, with a little bit of credit card comparison and some self discipline, credit cards don’t do any harm.

Of course, using a credit card indiscriminately can get you into a lot of trouble. No one in their right mind would deny that. The interest rates, especially for those with poor credit, can be astronomically high, and it doesn’t take very long for that interest to accumulate into a massive, unmanageable heap of debt.

But just because you have a few plastic cards in your wallet or purse doesn’t mean that you need to act like you don’t have any common sense. Credit cards shouldn’t be used to take the place of cash that you don’t have in most cases (dire emergencies excepted). Rather, they should be used for their intended purpose: making life more convenient and purchasing items and services which you can afford to pay off promptly.

These days, there are several things you simply can’t do without a credit card. For example, you will need a major credit card if you want to do any of the following things:

Rent a car.

Reserve a hotel room.

Book a flight on an airline.

Before you take any credit card, you should do some credit card comparison. Make sure that any card you accept allows you to avoid paying interest by paying off your balances immediately.

Other things you will want to compare and consider before choosing a credit card include:

Interest rates. Lower is better.

Fees. Again, lower is better.

Rewards. Find a credit card which offers rewards like frequent flier miles which will most benefit you. If you’re not interested in a rewards program yourself, consider a credit card which gives cash to your favorite charity when you charge.

Whether or not to use credit cards is a personal decision. If your lifestyle doesn’t require it, and you find yourself unable to pay credit cards off completely at the end of the month, you’re probably better off living without them. Just don’t buy into the idea that credit cards are a bad idea for everyone.

Knowing how to do a thorough credit card comparison is the most important skill you can have when choosing a new credit card. To perform a thorough credit card comparison you need to break down what you are looking for in a credit card. You must consider your credit history, what you will be using the credit card for, credit limits, fees, and rewards offered by different credit cards. Only by looking at all of these factors will you be able to perform a thorough credit card comparison.

The first thing to consider in a credit card comparison is your current credit history and financial status. A poor credit history means you will be limited in what credit cards you qualify for, while many high end credit cards take your current expenditure and net worth into consideration before approving you. One thing you must remember is that you should always have enough money to pay off anything you buy with your credit card to ensure a good credit history in the future. Do not try to overextend yourself.

The next step in a credit card comparison is to decide what you will be using the credit card for and what type of credit limit you need. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like to carry paper money and prefers to make your purchases with a credit card, you should look at a credit card with a higher credit limit. Just make sure that the limit is within your means to pay off each month. If you are just starting out on building your credit history, you should start with a card with a lower limit. That way it will be easier to pay off the bill in its entirety and on time and you can build a positive credit history. This way you prove you can be responsible with credit, and after some time you will be able to raise the limit.

The next part of a credit card comparison is to look at the specific fees of different credit cards that match what you are looking for so far. These fees come in the form of interest rates and annual fees. Interest rates can range from 0% introductory rates to 20% rates. These rates are compounded on to how much of your bill you haven’t paid each month, and can really add up over time. This is one reason why it is important to pay off your bill each month. Annual fees vary depending on cards and are basically upkeep fees for being able to use the credit card. Higher end credit cards generally have higher annual fees.

The last thing to consider in a thorough credit card comparison is the rewards that different cards offer. Rewards range from cash back on purchases made with a credit card to 24 hour concierge services to help plan vacations. The most common reward programs are cash back programs and airline miles programs. These offer you a percentage of your money back on purchase made with your credit card or airline miles that can be used for flights, hotels, or car rentals. With rewards it comes down to preference, and which rewards you would prefer to have. If you follow these steps to do a thorough credit card comparison, you will be able to find a credit card that matches your needs perfectly and also has some perks for you to enjoy.

Choosing your first credit card takes some very careful credit card comparison. Doing a thorough credit comparison when deciding on your first credit card is very important, as choosing the wrong card can cost you a great deal of money and even leave you in debt. There are many factors that you must take into consideration when doing a credit card comparison, including your credit history, credit limits, and interest rates.

One of the main things to consider when doing a credit card comparison for your first credit card is that your credit history is most likely limited, if you even have a credit history at all. This is because you build up credit through actions such as using a credit card or taking out loans and then paying the money back in full and on time. The problem this presents is that most credit card companies consider no credit to be on the same level as bad credit, and as a result your options on credit cards will be limited. Many of the credit cards with higher credit limits, lower interest rates, and better rewards programs can be limited to those with good credit scores. When doing the credit card comparison you should still be looking for good interest rates and reward programs when you can, but you must remember that your options will most likely be limited.

The main goal when doing a credit card comparison to choose your first credit card is to find a card that will allow you to build up your credit history. The credit limit of your first credit card is probably the most important feature to look at when choosing a card to build up your credit history. As stated previously, the best way to build up your credit card history is to pay off your bill in its entirety each month. A credit card with a lower limit will be easier to pay off each month. You must also consider what you plan on using your credit card for. The best strategy is to use it to pay bills and to never charge more to your credit card then you would be able to pay in cash.

If your credit card comparison leads you to a card with a lower limit that you can easily pay off, the other factors of the credit card comparison become a bit less important. If you are paying off your entire bill each month, you don’t have to worry about interest rates. The reward programs a card might offer are just the icing on the cake as long as you remember that your main goal is building up your credit history. One thing that you should look at carefully is the annual fee that credit cards charge. You want a credit card with a low annual fee, as that will save you money. If you are paying off your credit card in full each month to avoid interest fees, you don’t want that work to be undone by having to pay a ridiculously large annual fee. If you keep all these things in mind, you should be able to use a credit card comparison to pick the right first credit card for you.

The black American Express card, known as the Centurion, is the original black card. You have to meet very stringent requirements to qualify for the Centurion, and until recently people had to be invited by American Express to even apply for the Centurion card. Black Card LLC responded by coming out with the Visa Black Card. This Visa Black Card credit card offers many similar perks as the Centurion credit card, and it takes an in depth credit card comparison to see which is the better deal.

One of the big selling points on both of these cards is exclusivity. The requirements for both cards must be looked at when doing a credit card comparison. The Centurion credit card requires a nearly perfect credit history, $250,000 spent on an American Express Gold or Platinum card each year, a substantial net worth, and a $5000 activation fee. The Visa Black Card requires a near perfect credit history as well, an unspecified amount of expenditure on another Visa card, US residency, and a substantial net worth. A credit card comparison shows that the Visa Black Card is easier to be approved for, as long as you are a US resident.

Another thing to look at when doing a credit card comparison between the Centurion credit card and the Visa Black Card is the rewards that each offer. Both the Centurion and the Visa Black Card offer a 24 hour concierge service, allowing you to call and get assistance planning anything from a vacation to a party. They both also offer access to exclusive airport lounges for a variety of airlines, allowing you to relax in style before travel, along with upgrades to first class flights.

The Centurion also provides free companion tickets with every airline ticket purchased. The Centurion also gives you a personal shopper for products from companies such as Gucci and Estrada. One last thing the Centurion provides is a membership to a magazine published exclusively for Centurion holders called Black Ink. The Visa Black Card periodically offers exclusive gifts from high end retailers. Overall, the Centurion offers more perks, but the Visa Black Card is close behind.

Both the Centurion and Visa Black Card are made differently than your average credit card. This will play a part when doing a credit card comparison of the two. The Centurion is made of anodized titanium. This makes the card extremely durable, but causes some problems. The titanium makes the Centurion thicker than normal credit cards, and thus it can provide problems when being swiped as it won’t fit into the scanner. The Visa Black Card is also more durable than the average credit card, as it is made out of pure carbon graphite. This provides the durability along with being able to easily swipe the card through scanners, giving the Visa Black Card an edge over the Centurion in this category.

The last thing that should be considered in a credit card comparison between the Centurion and the Visa Black card is the cost of upkeep. The Centurion requires the monthly balance to be paid off in full every month, as does the Visa Black Card. The big difference is the Centurion requires an annual fee of $2,500 while the annual fee of the Visa Black Card is $495. The higher annual fee of the Centurion covers the cost of the more expensive rewards. After looking at this credit card comparison of the Centurion and the Visa Black Card, you will be able to decide which might be better for you.
